Gangs of New York brought historical drama to life by depicting the harsh reality for Irish immigrants in 1860s New York City. Despite Martin Scorsese's dedication to authenticity, the primary filming location was in Rome, Italy, where a mile-long stretch of buildings was constructed to replicate 19th-century New York. Only two days of filming took place in actual New York City, with the rest of the production being done at Silvercup Studio in Long Island City and requiring reshoots to recreate the climactic battle scene.
